Dye For Wool Rugs
I tackled the dyeing process when melissa my college roommate spent the weekend with me.
Dye for wool rugs. Over dyeing a rug requires two chemicals in your dye bath to help successfully adhere the dye molecules to the wool fibers. The owner didn t want to get rid of the rug it was seriously soft and comfy in her home office so she used a diy dye process to mask the stain and return the rug to service. Determine if your carpet can take dye because only nylon and wool are dye friendly. Liquid fabric dye applied with a foam brush adds high end dimension and color to a plain wool rug.
The ph stabilizer brings the rug to the acid side between 2 4 while the dye set penetrant acts as a leveling agent opening up the dye sites for the new color. Stir the dye bath with a wooden stirring stick to evenly spread the dye. Just prior to dyeing add several large potfuls of boiling water which will give your rug a much better color result. Add the amount of liquid or predissolved dye required for your rug.
In a great twist of fate i found a large 10 x 12 wool rug at the thrift store for only 15. If you are using a powder dye predissolve the dye in 2 cups of boiling water. It is a wool. Get a similar look for less with our diy painted rug project.
Patterned rugs can be pricey. A ph stabilizer and a dye set penetrant.
